Frederic Rzewski...

Sometimes recognized as a virtuoso pianist, sometimes as a composer in his own right, Frederic Rzewski is one of the most consistent, creative personalities of the last few decades. He is capable of exhilarating energy, performing his long piano compositions as to develop insightful ideas about the role of artists in a broader socio-historical context. The Sixties took Rzewski to Europe performing Stockhausen, Boulez, Cage, Bussotti, Kagel and many other composers as well as co-founding the influential electronic ensemble MEV with Alvin Curran and Richard Teitelbaum. Around 1969, he composed "Les Moutons de Panurge," a radical experiment with additive melodic formulas labeled after as minimalism. A few years after this piece, Rzewski balanced minimal accented cells with political texts in the remarkable "Attica" and "Coming Together". During the seventies, he was deeply concerned about problems relating to crises in musical theory, sociopolitical questions and aesthetic language. Regarding all of this, Rzewski's music has coped with many tensions and, in his own words, "it seemed to me (that) there was no reason why the most difficult and complex formal structures could not be expressed in a form which could not be understood by a wide variety of listeners", something for which he was criticized for. (Daniel Varela)

Jump Out Of The Clouds...

Sprung Aus Den Wolken were part of the 1981 "Geniale Dilletanten" (a Berlin festival of amateur experimental bands), promoting raw/minimal post-punk electronic music and heralding the rise of the industrial/noise scene of Berlin along with the likes of Die Tödliche Doris and Einstürzende Neubauten. Pretty sick stuff.

MVAL...

"Under various aliases – the Focus Group, the Advisory Circle, Belbury Poly – the secret chiefs of the Ghost Box label craft an apparently unique strand of British electronica, drawing on library recordings, 1970s schools television and psycho-geographical theory. But, lacking a genesis myth, they’ve exhumed Mount Vernon Arts Lab’s forgotten 1999 album, The Séance at Hobs Lane, which anticipated their innovations, and repackaged it in the livery of their own releases, fabricating evidence of a musical movement. The spiralling cello of The Black Drop has an eerie resonance, and Sir Keith at Lambeth’s shimmering oscillations trigger Proustian memories of teatime terror." (Stewart Lee)

Rayne...

"Frank Saucier and his 3 brothers formed Rayne in 1977, located in the New Orleans suburbia. They recorded the album with good home equipment with no overdubs. The original album (the black album as they called it) was only pressed 300 times and during a moment of frustration they took a box of the albums and shot them with a shotgun. So not many left to sell. The music is first class psych rock, strong compositions, great guitars & vocals, just everything right, something you would expect from a band located in New Orleans. Southern spirit and the tough guys don't dance thing, they play music instead."
