Worst Case Scenario

Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, before the churches were burning or growls were autotuned, there existed a brutal cross-genre metal scene. Reeking of smack and sweat, it mostly festered away in grotty Sydney pubs. Band members would play a hardcore show one weekend and grinding death metal the week after. It didn't really matter to most of the crowd what genre it was, as long as the beer was cold and the sound was filthy fucking heavy. There just wasn't enough good heavy gigs to make you fussy about all that pussy metal-nerd shit. No-one used the internet.

Recording was an overpriced hassle and even then it was almost impossible to get them sounding as thick and aggressive as the shows. Which makes this 1995 compilation a bit of a landmark. It doesn't sound half as shit as most of the EP's and albums these bands released subsequently, despite some pretty comical song titles like Bus Driver From Hell or Psycho Cunt. As far as I can tell, Jody and Dave of Sydney death/grind act Persecution got fed up chasing overseas record deals and decided to form their own label, Underclass, painstakingly putting together this release as a harbinger of the festering holocaust they planned to infect society with.

Said infection didn't really catch on because I picked up this CD second hand at Utopia for $5 in '97, recognising only Sadistik Exekution and Toe To Toe from the older skaters' logo-riddled cutoff army pants and jackets. Today, a lot of these songs sound clearly derivative of the US scene - Beergut could be a Slayer cover band and Misery sound a lot like Disembowel - but I'll be damned if there isn't a totally unique thread to the dirty, under-produced sludge on this compilation, really honest and raw. Unclean, Persecution and Misery saved me from the dismal popular skate metal of the day (Pantera, Korn and Pennywise) and for that I'm forever grateful. Aftermath are suitably foul too, once you realise Organic Spare Parts refers to internal organs, not macrobiotic dipsticks. Crack open a cold VB and enjoy, mate.

G&S FOOTAGE (1990)

Seminal and most definitely one of the best skateboard videos ever... of course in hindsight maybe not for the standard of the skating but style wise and in comparison to the vids coming out of California during that period it differs, seeing as most of the footage was filmed in middle America and the East Coast. Great soundtrack too. Made by Neil Blender just before the conception of Alien Workshop whose opening ceremony was heralded a year later with another great vid titled 'Memory Screen' which helped cast the aesthetic of the company that's still (barely) visible today.

Cheers Mikey for ripping and uploading the disc, preesh!

JUSTICE YELDHAM

"Justice Yeldham, a maverick musician with an unhealthy obsession with sheets of broken glass. In his infamous show that has astonished and bemused countless people in over 40 countries, yeldham ecstatically purses his lips against sheets of amplified glass whilst deftly employing various vocal techniques ranging from throat singing to raspberries, turning discarded shards into crude musical instruments. The results are a wild array of cacophonous noise that is strangely controlled and oddly musical. The instruments simple, original and effective premise is a welcome riposte to over complicated musical performances of modern times. A one of a kind act re-defining the expression 'don't try this at home' this show quite simply needs to be witnessed to be fully appreciated, let alone understood."

Skate scene video by Jon Robson ...likely of no interest whatsoever to you unless your one of about twenty to thirty skaters who graced the rough pavements and shitty housing estates of North East England around 1990. Featuring the youth of Harry Bastard, Gordon Skrezka, Davvy Heron, Neil Urwin, Craig Borthwick and more...

Cheers to Craig Borthwick for getting the only copy left off Ian Pearce and thanks to Dead Mike for uploading it for me and thanks to Jon of course for making it!

Fatso Jetson

Did Hitler simply seize power through a few inspirational speeches, or did he use fear, intimidation, and a well funded propaganda campaign (backed by wealthy industrialists who thought Fascism would be a great way to boost the bottom line) to drive his country into war?
The story of IG Farben is an Enron executive's wet dream. IG Farben was the German industrial monopoly that turned the once Democratic Germany into a tool for terror and global domination simply because it was good for business.
Mussolini said, "Fascism, should more apropriately be called Corporatism, because it is the merger of State and Corporate Power." But more to the point, Fascism is great for the bottom line. Especially if your Business is war.
If you've never heard of IG Farben, then the real story of Hitler's rise to power and the Military Industrial Complex that backed him may come as a shock. Especially given the parallels and connections between the administrations of both the Bush Presidents who were backed by many of the same people and corporations that backed Hitler.

[From 1938 to 1946, Joseph Borkin was the chief of the Patent and Cartel section of the Antitrust Division of the Department of Justice in Washington, and was responsible for the wartime investigation and prosecution of the cartels dominated by I. G. Farben. During the war, he published Germany's Master Plan which led the Associated Press to say: "Joseph Borkin probably knows more about I. G. than anyone outside of it".]
